It is time to clean up the mess

Yesterday marked four weeks since a horrible fire broke out in Everett’s McCrossen building, killing one and destroying several homes and businesses.

After a walk through downtown earlier this week, I looked up at the damaged building that still looks virtually untouched since the fire, and asked myself, “Why in the world is a torched building across the street from our downtown’s largest attraction not cleaned up?” There are a handful of people in this city hard at work to attract visitors downtown to spend money, with the hope that one day our downtown will be vibrant and prosperous.

If the boarded up homes across the street from our county campus and derelict buildings weren’t enough, this pure negligence on the city’s part has made me question our city’s integrity. Let’s hope that when Kitchen Nightmares airs their Everett episode, they don’t show the nation what Everett’s downtown really looks like (Wednesday article: “Gordon Ramsey drops by, Kitchen Nightmares’ films at Everett’s Prohibition Grill”)
