The city of Everett is suing for topsoil and grass on the former Kimberly-Clark property. Should a business purchase the property, the topsoil and grass would most likely be removed to build improvements. Should grass be planted, there would be a push to have the property not sold and used instead for a waterfront park. That park in turn may attract a constant cost for upkeep and a possible area that the homeless would camp on, plus drug sales and costs to police.
Our port and the jobs the property can attract need to be at the forefront. Scott Paper/Kimberly-Clark put a lot of paychecks into our economy and furnished good-paying jobs for years.
The plan that the city had been working on with Foss Maritime seemed to be a perfect fit and the company has a history with our waterfront. Seems to me that a Kimberly-Clark solution can be made and a deal worked out with Foss Maritime. Let’s go forward and take action now. Opportunity for action and jobs go hand in hand.
