It would indeed be reassuring if gun owners could be as optimistic as some Herald readers concerning the true intentions of the current liberal leaders’ anti-gun crusade. However, we have had ample justification to disbelieve those liberal powers who claim that they solemnly respect the Second Amendment, and that there’s no reason for us to suspect their motives.
During his prior campaigns in Illinois, and for the U.S. Senate, Obama is on record as stating that “No one, but the police and military should have guns.” Other Democratic leaders such as Sens. Feinstein and Schumer have led the charge to either totally deny, or greatly restrict the types of guns that would be allowed to private citizens. Mayor Bloomberg has been the leader in enlisting big city mayors in his campaign to impose draconian gun controls. Then we have billionaire George Soros who funds numerous anti-gun organizations, as well of other openly left-wing groups, and generously contributes to anti-gun political coffers and politicians.
The government doesn’t have to physically confiscate guns to achieve the same result. That can be done by simply enacting onerous taxes on essential materials, restricting their availability, or as is currently being done, buying up billions of rounds of ammunition, thus creating a shortage in the private market. This ammunition isn’t all going to the military, by any means, but to many other government agencies like Homeland Security, etc., which are buying tens of millions of rounds in excess of normal requirements. The irony is that many police forces and law enforcement agencies are experiencing real difficulties is finding sufficient supplies for their needs.
The NRA is demonized and accused of exerting inordinate political clout, far in excess of its membership numbers. To that I would respond that perhaps they have merely learned to use the same tactics that have worked so successfully for so many labor unions over the years!
