Look under your chair

You get a website! And you get a website! Oprah Winfrey is bringing her OWN to the Huffington Post website. Winfrey’s new section on HuffPo will feature material from the Oprah Winfrey Network and Oprah.com, focusing on lifestyle advice and personal inspiration.

Like the rest of HuffPo, it’s stuff you’ve read before but repackaged in huge, bold, hard-to-read type and a busy distracting layout.

Every hurricane has a silver lining: It was shaping up to be a bad year for the Weather Channel, which depends on bad weather for viewership. Recent layoffs claimed 80 workers after viewership dropped 18.5 percent. But superstorm Sandy has helped ratings.

It still lost 80 employees, but this time it wasn’t layoffs; reporters and camera crews were carried off by high winds and seas.

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1948. President Harry S. Truman, D-Yes, There’s a Period After the S, surprised the experts by winning a narrow victory over challenger Thomas Dewey, R-Footnote.

The Chicago Daily Tribune’s famous headline, “Dewey Defeats Truman,” was actually accurate when you read the smaller type below that read, “At Scrabble as Both Waited for Returns.”
