Education is a great equalizer in a world in which children live in all varieties of socioeconomic situations, having absolutely no control over the circumstances into which they are born. We believe every child is entitled to the opportunity to earn a high school diploma; we believe in public schools.
As supporters of public education, we encourage our Marysville community to vote “yes” to approve the two levies on the ballot in February. The positive impact in our schools will be monumental, and the cost to the voters will feel negligible. Both current levies expire in 2018. In total, the two replacement levies amount to $3.64 per thousand of assessed home value, which is 42 cents less per $1,000 than current levels.
The Replacement Education Programs and Operations Levy provides funding to ensure students have enough classroom teachers and instructional aides to reduce and maintain smaller class sizes; provides funds for nurses, counselors and other support staff; funds programs for students with special needs; and supports art, music, and athletics.
The Replacement Technology and Capital Projects Levy keeps our students and schools equipped to harness the information available on the internet through personal computers and up-to-date Wi-Fi access. Providing Google Chromebooks to every middle and high-schooler allows every child equal access to information, be it assignments, research, messages from school, or even payments for lunches. In today’s culture, all students require and deserve access to technology to be successful.
Finally, the Capital Projects portion of the levy ensures that our children have a safe and healthy learning environment. It provides funding for roof and gutter replacements, fire system upgrades, door and hardware replacements, boiler replacements and heating improvements, floor replacements, electrical retrofits such as lighting, outlets, intercoms and siding replacements. Due to the fiscally responsible actions of the Marysville School District team, every Marysville school has had upgrades during the past year. The district understands the importance of maintaining schools, and there is much more work to be done.
Thank you for voting “yes” for the Marysville School District and supporting our children and our community.
