I grew up on a farm. I learned to shoot when I was 8 years old and was hunting on my own by age 10. I understand the need for guns and believe that any sane person who needs a gun for defense, for hunting or any legitimate reason should be able to get one. But things have gotten badly out of control.
Haven’t we seen enough of our children slaughtered like pigs? Killed, maimed, crippled and traumatized for life! How many more shattered families, bereft of father, mother, child or grandchild do we need to see before we say enough? Our politicians are afraid to take action on gun safety for fear of the NRA, the lobbying group for gun manufacturers that within days of the Columbine school slaughter was laughing in the face of grieving parents and survivors by demanding to hold their upcoming convention just next door in Denver.
The NRA has become a menace to us and to our children and, frankly, should be treated as a terrorist organization. Any politician who takes money from this organization should be considered in the same light as a person giving aid and comfort to the enemy during wartime — because war is exactly what this feels like. It feels as if the NRA has painted big targets on the backs of our children and ourselves and has encouraged any wacko that can get his hands on a gun to take aim and fire.
If as citizens we can’t get our priorities straight and demand reasonable gun laws then I guess we will just have to get used to putting our children into body bags and watching the NRA sneer at us while we do it.
