I am a long time subscriber, most recently reading The Herald online. Prior to the recent election for a new Everett mayor, I was stunned to see an ad against one of the candidates that can only be described as sleazy and extremely negative. In addition, the ad was placed and depicted as if it were a news story, seemingly popping up in different locations. I have no problem with the content, as this is what political ads do — bringing out the best and worst in candidates, per an advertiser’s point of view. However, this ad was negative and misleading beyond the pale. It seemed to masquerade as news content when, in fact, it was an ad. Its design and its content were of very poor taste, to say nothing of the design quality.
I know that below-the-belt ads are now the norm in newspaper advertising, but I expect more from The Herald. And, I have always felt that the paper remained above the belt when accepting ads, as well as presenting news content. I was stunned and angered by this type of ad discoloring a news source that I have always respected. I expect better in the future, and will willingly cancel my subscription if this type of presentation discolors your paper, for which I have always had respect.
