Republicans
Party now Russian sympathizers
It was with a mix of sorrow and disgust that I watched Republicans in the impeachment hearings parroting Russian propaganda talking points about a Ukraine server and Joe Biden. They’ve been briefed by our intelligence agencies and know these are lies, part of Russia’s disinformation campaign, so why are they doing it?
At first I thought they were too craven and supine to stand up to Trump, but actively participating in the Russian op? Why have they crossed this anti-democracy Rubicon to support the attack by our nations adversary? It seems as though some members of the GOP would actually prefer Putin and his form of autocratic oligarchy to our constitutional democracy. And why not, Putin is their ideal model for a candidate. He is the leader of a white, Christian nation that is hard on Muslims. He doesn’t allow “fake news” to be printed. He isn’t bothered by a pesky opposition, and will never permit investigations into his criminal behavior.
To all those who want a president who is a “strong man” who is above the law, I’d ask you to look into how well that’s worked out for the people ruled by such despots. History is replete with examples: Germans under Hitler, Russians under Stalin, Chinese under Mao.
To see the Republicans, who used to stand up to Russia and support our military, now ignoring factual evidence in favor of Russian lies and slandering distinguished soldiers and veterans in the process is sad and dangerous. We need to soundly reject this anti-Americanism at the ballot box and banish this (formerly Republican) Trump party to the political wilderness for a decade or more, until a principled conservative party arises to replace it.
