Two roundabouts planned, and now in work, on Highway 92 at 99th Avenue NE and 113th Avenue NE are, in my opinion, the most irrational decisions made in Lake Stevens, Snohomish County and Washington State DOT. The cost quoted of $7.7 million of taxpayer dollars for these two roundabouts surely cannot be justified. The installation of simple “on demand” stop lights at these two locations be more practical and cost effective than two roundabouts.
In my opinion, these roundabouts are putting every person’s lives on the line in a dangerous game of “Russian Roulette with two-ton projectiles.” Several times my wife and I have even encountered aggressive drivers, including local school buses, charging through roundabouts with their 20 ton buses causing us to brake, and even stop, to avoid hitting or being broadsided.
I personally do not believe the roads are safer because of the roundabouts. Drivers, like me, have changed their travel routes to avoid these roundabouts. The rationale stated by some that roundabouts “saves fuel or will move traffic faster and save lives” is unfounded. The quote in The Lake Stevens Journal June 5 that “the students wanted a safer intersection, and that the students would like the ‘older folks’ to move a little more quickly through the roundabout” is a silly statement. If people left a few minutes earlier they might not be in such a hurry.
We, by choice, travel roads that do not involve roundabouts, because, in my opinion, they are dangerous to travel and certainly not the way we were taught to drive. Stop signs, stop lights, turn lanes are how we have driven for years, why turn us into European drivers? The two “mini roundabouts” at Frontier Village area are a joke and prime example of “non-logical road revisions”. Start being justifying expenditures; repair existing roads; stop wasting tax payers money on road obstacle courses.
