I, for one, applaud Seahawk’s Michael Bennett for his act of courage and commitment to the ideals he holds true (“Bennett will continue to sit during the national anthem,” The Herald, Aug. 17). Mr. Bennett has long spoken his truth, and it is a show of honor that he takes this further by actions that put him in a position to be subjected to others’ judgments and remarks. Very few others are willing to stand up in such a manor in regard to the issues of today. This freedom of expression is exactly what our flag stands for and our national anthem expresses.
We do live in a world in need of reflection, discussion and change when it comes to inequality and unfairness. We need leaders in all arenas to take a stand and speak out. We need brave, courageous, moral persons to bring attention to the issues of the day and Mr. Bennett’s demonstration is justified and appropriate. It has my attention and I believe it also has yours.
Hear the message. It is quietly given and profoundly communicated through an act of selfless risk to reputation and livelihood. Do not damn the messenger. Damn the injustice and inequality that exists in our communities today that demand these actions. Let us be better persons to each other. Let us do better for all.
I wish I could sit down next to Mr. Bennett and show my support for his actions. He is a brave man, a model to our community and I am thankful for his demonstration.
