My son has medical, behavioral health and housing stability issues. Many specialists from a variety of “resources”; that is support groups, social service workers, religious groups and the many letters to the editor counsel us to reach out for assistance to help us deal with a family or individual problem.
This is wonderful advice; however every time my son or I have reached out our hope was turned into hopelessness. The majority of people who have promised to assist us have failed to follow through.
I am extremely disappointed to say that those have failed us were people from our court system, the Snohomish County Social Services system, or other social activist groups, which agreed to assist my son and me. But after they find out my son is a “hard and complicated case” which will lead to the potential helper having to put in a lot of time and energy, well, they just stop taking our calls or they forget to return calls.
This non-support from so called support agencies is causing my son and me to have longer and longer periods of despair. But I am still motivated to reach out in hopes of getting real help for my son even though those who have volunteered to assist my son and I have given up on both of us.
Those rebuffs are demoralizing and frustrating. Yet, we just can’t give up our desire to get our much needed assistance. I am somewhat optimistic that maybe just maybe my open letter to the public will motivate others who are also being put-off as they too seek help will share their sad stories. Then hopefully (that word again) by us collectively doing so we will motivate those who say “We are here to help!”
Well, then, in fact do just that. Please help us.
