People retiring this year are members of the first generation of workers who have paid more into Social Security than they will receive in benefits, The Associated Press reports. That’s partly because Social Security taxes were very low during the program’s first three decades, when retirees collected far more money than they had paid in.

Sure, Grandpa got a great deal when he retired from the sawmill back in 1960, but then again, he didn’t enjoy the safety net of a greeter job at the local Wal-Mart, or the option of working until he was 85.

Dessert gone bananas: If you have some bananas, a blender and a freezer, you can make a healthful — and surprisingly tasty — alternative to ice cream.
