Channel-surfing the vast cultural wasteland: After only two episodes, CBS has canceled the new Monday night sitcom, “We Are Men,” about four men struggling in their relationships with women. In its place at 8:30 p.m., CBS is moving “Two Broke Girls,” about two women struggling in their relationships with men. And subbing for it at 9 p.m. will be reruns of “The Big Bang Theory,” about four men struggling in their relationships with women. Remaining for now at 10 p.m., is the new drama, “Hostages,” about kidnappers struggling in their relationship with their hostages.

Tune in next week as we watch CBS struggle to keep its viewers and advertisers.

Speaking of reruns: There was little progress in Washington, D.C., to break the stalemate to end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling.

Or, to put it in sitcom terms, 535 members of Congress struggling to pull their heads out of 535 dark places.

Party on, dudes: Police in Bellingham used pepper spray to break up a drunken party of about 500 people, described by a witness as “this horrible ignorant mob.”

Or, to put it in Congressional terms, the House of Representatives.
