I was pleased with a couple of letters recently that got to the heart of the matter. We already have gun control laws now — so many — but every time we try to severely punish someone committing a crime with a gun, the defense runs to the ACLU and the media with cries of racism or injustice.
The Herald on Wednesday reported a gun-wielding person kidnapping an EvCC student with a gun. Fortunately, the student was released unharmed. What punishments will that gun-wielding person face?
NRA supports tough punishments of people committing a gun-related crime. It publishes stories where civilians with legal guns have prevented crimes without having to discharge their weapon. For example, Jacob Tyler Roberts who killed two people at the Clackamas Mall recently was stopped only after a citizen showed the shooter his legal weapon. The citizen did not have to fire his gun before Roberts committed suicide. So, here’s a law-abiding courageous citizen on the scene preventing further violence.
Look at our justice system and its punishments of people committing crimes with guns and look at intervention efforts to identify anti-social behavior. Confiscation of law-abiding citizen’s weapons won’t do a thing.
