It is always important to take time to count one’s blessings. I think given the political tension that seems part of our national fabric this year, such an exercise seems essential to ensure personal well-being. Oddly, such an instance of gratitude occurred for me this afternoon during an appointment which could cause a sense of personal discomfort. I reported for my mammogram; a ritual which is part of the feminine aging process.
As usual I found the Providence Comprehensive Breast Center to be an amazing place. Each year they send a reminder that I am due for my exam, and I am grateful to be “nudged” into scheduling the event. Today, as always, my check-in was handled with thoughtfulness and professionalism. The staff is always pleasant and makes a real effort to put clients at ease. Coffee and tea are even offered as one waits. The changing rooms are welcoming, and the technicians are always very knowledgeable. They answer questions when asked, explain what they are doing, and make every effort to make an awkward procedure as swift and pleasant as possible. Today, all of this made me realize my good fortune: the attention I received was prompt, thorough and reassuring.
Later, as I dressed and prepared to leave the center, I experienced a true feeling of gratefulness. I realized how lucky I am to live in a community that has a clinic such as the Comprehensive Breast Center completely devoted to ensuring the health of the clients it serves. The wonderful, caring women who staff this facility truly deserve my sense of thankfulness.
