Trustees do not set Wenta’s salary

Regarding the Everett School Board candidacy of Ted Wenta, there has been inaccurate information disseminated regarding his YMCA working relationship with Everett Public School’s District Superintendent Gary Cohn.

To clarify, Ted Wenta serves as Vice President-Operations for the YMCA of Snohomish County and reports directly to YMCA President and CEO Scott Washburn. Mr. Wenta’s work is evaluated and his salary is determined by Mr. Washburn based on the human resource policies and guidelines of the YMCA.

Dr. Cohn serves as one of 30 individuals on the YMCA of Snohomish County Board of Trustees. The trustees set broad human resources policies and approve the YMCA budget, which includes total personnel costs. Trustees have no role or influence in the performance evaluation or salary determination of any individual staff member, except for Mr. Washburn’s.

Furthermore, as part of the YMCA’s annual audit conducted by an independent CPA firm, YMCA trustees are required to identify business or personal relationships that may create a conflict of interest. If such conflicts arise in the course of YMCA board business, individual trustees are required to abstain from voting on those matters.
