Regarding the 787 total grounding; what’s next?
In view of outsourcing, it’s most likely true that “too many cooks spoil the broth.” Or how about, “people who can’t understand each other shouldn’t build a plane together”?
Many of us retired Boeing folks, and several Boeing workers I have talked to recently, feel that the 787 may have problems beyond the present lithium battery fiasco. If you think about it, common sense indicates that having airplane components built all over the world may produce unknown stress-points after assembly.
I wrote a letter on July 22 last year about the possibility of “refreshing” the Boeing executive decision-making team by replacing them and bribing Alan Mulally to return to bail us out. To quote:
“A group of us retired Boeing folks decided that the best way to solve the major problems at Boeing, such as 787 construction and delivery delays, labor, job outsourcing and sales issues, etc., is to borrow enough money to buy back Alan Mulally and give severance pay to the present CEO and his team. Problems solved!”
I feel the need to modify that statement and submit that perhaps the best, and probably a cheaper solution, may be to fire the present team (no severance bonus) and outsource their jobs as well — I hear that executive labor is real cheap overseas.
Seriously, outsourcing jokes aside, perhaps new decision makers would recognize the true bottom line — and that is to return to building the best, most reliable airplanes in the world — all built in the USA.
