On Wednesday the Snohomish County Council joined with over 275 municipalities, six states, 54 Washington state legislators and the U.S. Conference of Mayors in signing a formal resolution calling on Congress to amend the Constitution to overturn the egregious Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United.
In so doing they gave formal voice to an opinion substantiated by virtually every poll on the matter: The people of the United States, regardless of their political persuasion, overwhelmingly feel that campaign money buys government policy. And the vast majority of it comes from a few “donors” who are wealthy beyond the imagination of most Americans and whose political goals do not serve the common good. This was true before the 2010 Citizens United decision and is dramatically worse now.
It’s time to tell an obviously ideological Supreme Court that the people of the United States will no longer stand for the corruption of their government by big money, from any source, but especially not from for profit corporations that are by design and legal mandate driven to produce profit at all costs, including the destruction of our democracy. No more!
On Wednesday the Snohomish County Council spoke out for the rest of us. Their action, along with those of Seattle, Bellingham, Port Townsend, Langley, and the Jefferson and Island County councils, will help us achieve a Washington state resolution next year. Thank them at 425-388-3494.
