As we all turn our attention toward a more sustainable way of life (energy, food and transportation), I have to ask the Everett School Board why it is sitting on that 10-plus acres along Colby Avenue north of the Everett Golf and Country Club.
For years I’ve driven, bicycled and walked by this land, always wondering why it’s vacant. This land could be cultivated into community gardens or school gardens (maintained by students) and could produce a substantial amount of food for the school district, as well as educate young people on where their food comes from. I’m thinking that some Everett residents would enjoy working there too, on their own plot, or volunteering for the schools.
It’s clear of trees, so maximum sun, when it shines, would make a perfect place to grow stuff.
During my tenure as a primary school student in the 1950s, we actually had a garden plot at school wherein we grew many vegetables and other plants.
Anyone else had this same thought? If the board is thinking it’s for investment or future development, I’d say a change in plan is needed.
