There are several people presently running to be mayor of Everett. One of those proudly proclaims to be endorsed by your firefighters. While I have the highest regards for all firefighters, this is the candidate I will not vote for. To me, this is politics at its worse, for we all know that endorsements are not free. It raises the specter of collusion, either explicitly or implicitly.
It is interesting to note that there have been two other letters to the editor that have touched on this subject. One author being against and the other apparently not seeing any problem with a public union becoming involved in city politics.
The question to be answered is this: Is it reasonable to assume that a union leadership would invest membership dues to promote a political candidate and not expect something in return? It may be naive to expect something different in politics, but I would like the people I vote for to be “fetter-free.”
We all have a choice and mine will continue to be an automatic “No” vote to any candidate who carries similar endorsement in the future. That’s my stance and I’m sticking to it.
