We’re going to need more crackers

Badgering Boeing: Missouri and other states continued work on incentive packages to convince Boeing to build its new 777X in their state. Missouri could pass its $1.7 billion package of tax breaks by Friday. Also preparing proposals are Alabama, Kansas and Wisconsin.

Wisconsin, although not invited to submit a proposal, was working on a deal that included a promise to honor Boeing at next year’s state fair with a full-size cheese sculpture of the 777X.

Kicked in their little red cabooses: One day after a lawsuit was filed, BNSF Railway reversed itself and said it would provide health care benefits to the same-sex spouses of its employees.

Fun fact: Warren Buffett, whose Berkshire Hathaway investment company controls 100 percent of the freight railway, has a railroad crossing sign in his office that alerts him when his executives do something stupid.

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1933, Utah became the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, ending Prohibition and allowing the sale of alcohol (Today in History, Page A2).

This explains the little smile and quiet toast your grandfolks shared every Dec. 5.
