I appreciate the Monday letter, “Include women among choices,” regarding the nominating process to fill the county executive vacancy. I also appreciate the writer’s support of affirmative action, and gender equity.
I think the Democratic Party in Washington, and in Snohomish County, would agree and promote womens’ participation in government at every level. In fact, the Democratic Party got the message years ago.
Democratic women in Washington play an important role in our local, county, state, and national governments. For most of this century a Democratic woman, Christine Gregoire, has been our governor. Both of our United States senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, are Democratic women. The 1st District’s newly elected Congresswoman, Suzane DelBene, is a Democrat. The only woman elected to the Snohomish County Council, Stephanie Wright, is a Democrat.
Gender does not seem to be a factor with the Snohomish County Democratic Party. Half of the Legislative District Representatives are women, five of six committee chairs are women, and three of seven executive board members are women.
I don’t know who will be selected the next Snohomish County Executive. I just want it to be the most qualified, regardless of gender.
I am not a member of the Democratic Party, and have never attended a meeting of the Snohomish County Democrats. I do know, however, that based upon their past actions, my granddaughter will be well served by their choice for our next Snohomish County Executive.
