TALKING POINTS

The Tips started the second half victorious in front of a packed house at Comcast Arena. Here's some bullet points:

- The last game of the first half was a 7-6 shootout victory over Victoria with goals galore. So of course the first game of the second half was going to end 1-0.

- Everett's players may have indulged themselves a tad too much during the break as the Tips were very energetic in the first period, but not...

First of all, I want to wish everyone happy holidays. I hope the season has treated you all well.

And in the spirit of the season, I thought I'd share a few thoughts about Everett's first half:

- So far this season's team has been eerily similar to last season's team. Everett started off red hot, but then injuries hit and the team cooled as the Christmas break approached. The offense has been propped up by one transcendent talent (Joshua Winquist last season,...

The WHL isn't the only hockey league taking a break for Christmas. All the other junior and midget teams are also getting a breather, which makes this a good time for a prospect update. I'm working off Everett's protected list from the offseason, so surely there are recent additions who I've overlooked, as well as players listed here who have been dropped. But anyway, here we go. Players are listed with their position, age, team and statistics:

The Silvertips finished the first half of the season 20-9-3-1 and in first place in the WHL's U.S. Division, three points ahead of second-place Portland with three games in hand. The Tips started off the season red hot, going 14-2-2-1 out of the gate, but they've slowed of late, finishing off 6-7-1-0. The team has scored more goals than expected as the...

TALKING POINTS

Well, this is the kind of wild game that can happen on the last day before the Christmas break.

Sure, there were a lot of goals scored, some of which were nice. And it made for quite the spectacle -- an early Christmas gift for the fans as they more than got their money's worth tonight.

But for the most part this game was not well played. There was bad team defense, shoddy puck control, shaky goaltending, questionable...

OK, here's something for the nostalgia lovers.

For Everett's game Friday against Prince George the Tips put together a line of Matt Fonteyne at center, Patrick Bajkov at right wing and Jake Mykitiuk at left wing. I was struck at just how identical it was to Everett's fourth line in 2006-07 when the Tips won the Scotty Munro Trophy for the league's best record. Consider:

- At center you have a 17-year-old third-round bantam draft pick in his second season with...

TALKING POINTS

The past two nights the third periods have been night and day for the Silvertips.

On Friday the Tips took a 1-0 lead into the third period against Prince George, but surrendered the initiative and ended up losing 3-1. It was a pattern that's become all too familiar for Everett the past month.

On Saturday the Tips carried a 4-2 lead in the third against Tri-City, and I imagine many of us were wondering if the...

TALKING POINTS

If I can paraphrase the comedian Chris Rock, "Those Silvertips ain't go crazy, those Silvertips went Silvertips!" (you'll have to search for the tiger quote yourself).

Everett fell back into its bad third-period habits again. The Tips led 1-0 going into the third and had a 20-10 edge on the shot clock. It seemed like Everett should have been in control of the game.

But as has become all too frequent for Everett over...

Everett won another shootout Tuesday when the Tips topped Tri-City, winning a six-round shootout 1-0.

The victory was Everett's fourth in a shootout this season, and the Tips at 4-1 sit at the top of the WHL's shootout standings.

The holidays are approaching, which means it's teddy bear toss season in the WHL.

The teddy bear toss is simple. Fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears to the game, and after the home team scores its first goal the teddy bears get tossed onto the ice. They are then collected and donated to local charities.

TALKING POINTS

That was a fun game to watch.

Medicine Hat has a really good team, and the Tigers have played the same style for as long as I can remember. Medicine Hat always has a bunch of small, fast forwards, and they aren't just fast of foot, they play a fast game as they're constantly moving the puck. It makes for very entertaining hockey.

Everett actually outshot the Tigers 31-16, and I thought the Tips played pretty well. But...

The Tips moved to address their depth issues up front Thursday, bringing in 19-year-old forward Jake Mykitiuk from the AJHL's Spruce Grove Saints.

Mykitiuk, who's from St. Albert, Alberta, spent his 16- and 17-year-old seasons in the WHL with the Prince George Cougars, where he was probably best known for being short. He spent the past two seasons in the AJHL with the Saints,...

TALKING POINTS

This game was all set up to be another third-period disaster for Everett.

The Tips entered the third period leading 3-1. They gave up a goal less than six minutes into the third. They were playing a Spokane team that's given Everett more trouble in the third period than any other in the league. And with the Tips fresh off blowing a 3-0 third-period lead against Kootenay on Sunday, there was a definite sense of, "Here we go...
