TALKING POINTS

So here's the deal. I had already written up half this post during the second intermission, discussing how Kelowna had the kind of depth to absorb injures that Everett didn't.

Then the Tips forced me to toss all that in the trash bin and start over.

I don't think one can overstate just how big a win this was for Everett. The Tips were down 2-0 early in the third period and had created nothing offensively. But despite...

TALKING POINTS

I think the Tips may have burned all their finishing in Friday's game against Calgary.

Everett finished off almost all of its chances in beating Calgary 7-2. But it was the complete opposite against Prince George. The Tips worked the puck into good scoring position regularly during the game's first 40 minutes, but the shot would either go wide or straight into Prince George goaltender Ty Edmonds' gut. Maybe Everett should have...

TALKING POINTS

This was an enormously big win for Everett. Not just in terms of the standings, but also in terms of momentum. The Tips limped into Friday, having lost six of their past nine and watched their lead atop the U.S. Division shrink to two points over Portland. And what awaited them Friday? Just the hottest team in the WHL, a Calgary squad that had won 15 of its past 16 -- outscoring its opponents 79-29 in the process -- and rolled through the...

A different approach The Everett Silvertips are in a slump. Wednesday's 3-1 loss at Spokane meant the Tips have dropped six of their past nine games, and their lead atop the WHL's U.S. Division has shrunk to two points over the Portland Winterhawks.

So did the coaches have the Tips bear down extra hard at practice Thursday? Quite the contrary, they took the exact opposite approach.

I missed this on Sunday, but it still deserves its own headline.

Everett goaltender Austin Lotz moved into rare air Sunday when he won his 72nd career game for the Tips, moving him in second all-time in Everett history.

TALKING POINTS

There's two ways of looking at this one.

On the one hand, this was a crucial victory for the Tips. Everett needed to salvage something from this weekend, and the Tips needed to end their three-game losing streak, especially following Saturday night's 7-0 disaster at Seattle. The Tips not only managed that, they held onto a one-goal lead late in the third period with a minimum of drama, which hasn't been something Everett has...

This is not the type of trend a team wants to set.

Everett once again found itself with a one-goal lead late in the third period. Once again the Tips couldn't hold it, allowing the tying goal in the final moments. And once again Everett dropped a point by losing the shootout.

This was the fourth time in the past five games Everett has allowed a late tying goal, and it's the third time in the past four games the Tips...

TALKING POINTS

The Everett-Seattle rivalry was restored to normalcy tonight.

These teams have basically played nothing but one-goal games for four-plus seasons, but the last time they met Everett blew out Seattle 6-0 in a game that immediately followed an emotional T-birds victory at league-leading Kelowna. This was back to regularly scheduled programming, with both teams being tight defensively and scoring chances coming at a premium.

TALKING POINTS

This is a weird one to write about. Everett won 6-0, was in control on the scoreboard from start to finish, and there wasn't really a single moment when the result was in any doubt. Yet, it's hard for me to say the Tips played a good game as they didn't have much of a territorial advantage (shots were 25-22 in favor of Everett) and had some defensive lapses.

The difference in the game, by far, was finishing. Everett had its...

If you weren't there for last night's game (or even if you were), you've got to check this out. What's hard to see on the video is the shot went bar down, making it equally impressive as the moves that got Scherbak into that position in the first place.

We haven't seen this script in a while, but it's still familiar to those who have been following the Tips all season long. Everett, at home, had a comfortable two-goal lead going into the third period. Then the Tips imploded in the third, let the opposition back into the game, then let it slip away.

In truth, this was a pretty awful game through two periods. Both teams looked like they were just kind of going through the motions.

Here's the Silvertips news of the day:

- There was a Logan Aasman sighting on the ice at practice this afternoon. The 19-year-old winger hasn't played since Nov. 30 because of a concussion, and he remained at home for more than a month following the Christmas break to recover. However, he returned to Everett last week, and today he was took part in practice for the first time since suffering the injury. He was wearing a no-contact jersey and didn't participate in every...

As Everett assistant general manager Zoran Rajcic and I were waiting for the elevator to head down to the locker rooms following Everett's 4-3 overtime victory over Portland on Sunday, Rajcic remarked rhetorically that someone should look up how many points the Saskatoon Platoon line of Kohl Bauml, Carson Stadynk and Dawson Leedahl has produced of late.

Ask and ye shall receive.

The line actually formed just before the Christmas break, but they didn't really...

TALKING POINTS

Well that was fun.

Everett and Portland put on a show well worthy of the top two teams in the U.S. Division, and if this game is any indication it should be a wild ride to the finish line. This was an entertaining back-and-forth encounter full of drama that was appropriately decided in overtime.

It was the Saskatoon Platoon that did all the damage for Everett offensively. Kohl Bauml, Carson Stadnyk and Dawson Leedahl...
