Los Angeles forward/center Candace Parker and Indiana forward Tamika Catchings were named the Western Conference and Eastern Conference players of the week on Tuesday respectively.

The 2012 WNBA season kicked off this past Friday night at KeyArena with the Seattle Storm falling 72-66 to the Los Angeles Sparks. The schedule is now in full swing and each week I will be releasing my own version of the WNBA power rankings. This is the first installment of the season.

For 10 years, before the start of every WNBA season, general manager from each team conduct a survey which makes predictions for the upcoming campaign. The results of this year's survey are in and the Seattle Storm earned the top spot in several categories.

Storm announce opening day roster
The Seattle Storm open the 2012 WNBA season on Friday night at KeyArena against the Los Angeles Sparks. On Wednesday, they announced their 11-player opening day roster, making two final cuts, releasing guards Allie Quigley and Ashley Corral.

Storm release three
The Seattle Storm announced on Tuesday that they have waived guards Jacqua Williams, Dellena Criner and forward Rachel Allison.The roster now stands at 16 players with 10 players currently in camp. The other six players will report to the team when their overseas commitments are over.

Two Zags selected in WNBA draft
The defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx used the 19th overall selection to draft Gonzaga’s Kayla Standish. Standish was a standout forward for the Bulldogs, who averaged 16.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a senior.

Mercury's Taylor will miss 2012 season
Phoenix Mercury forward Penny Taylor will miss the 2012 WNBA season after tearing her left ACL in a March 29 Euroleague game. Taylor will need surgery and then begin the rehabilitation process.

Storm's Bird selected to US Olympic Team
Seattle Storm point guard Sue Bird has been named to the 2012 U.S. Women's Olympic team. USA Basketball announced the 11 members of the team on Friday.It will be the third Olympic Games for Bird, who was part of the gold-medal winning teams in Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008).
