Next up in the Silvertips’ preseason itinerary are two games this weekend at the Tri-City Preseason Tournament in Kennewick. Everett is the tournament’s early birds, playing at 11 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Here’s a quick primer:
– Everett takes on Spokane on Friday and Kootenay on Saturday. The Tips already played Spokane, beating the Chiefs 5-1 last weekend in Everett. However, the Chiefs played an almost exclusively rookie team while the Tips iced a lot of veterans. Therefore, expect this game to be rather different.
As for Kootenay, it was interesting chatting to Ice GM Jeff Chynoweth — the father of Tips center Ryan Chynoweth — during training camp. The Ice began training camp a week later than most teams, and these games are Kootenay’s first of the preseason. Therefore, Kootenay has few practices under its belt and will be playing a lot of rookies, and Jeff Chynoweth said the Ice always get blown out at Tri-City because they’re playing against teams that already have played games in Everett. We’ll see if that holds true this year.
– Tips center Kohl Bauml, who’s coming off offseason shoulder surgery, will not play this weekend. Bauml has participated fully in practices, and Everett coach Mark Ferner said Bauml could probably play. However, the Tips are erring on the side of caution. Expect to see Bauml make his preseason debut the following weekend in the home-and-home set against Seattle.
– It’s possible the Tips will use these games to determine their goaltending situation. As it stands, Everett has returning 17-year-old Austin Lotz and rookie 18-year-olds Andy Desautels and Troy Trombley competing for the two spots. You’d think Lotz has one of the spots. Ferner suggested Desautels and Trombley may each get one full game this weekend to show what they can do.
