SEATTLE — The University of Washington’s trip to New York City wasn’t the smoothest of journeys.
The Huskies opened the 2K Classic with a 77-70 loss to Providence. UW, after being down by double figures in the second half, came close but could never get the go-ahead buckets late.
A day later, UW was blown out in a 103-79 loss by Virginia Tech.
Now the Huskies (2-2) return home to face Seattle University. It will be the Huskies’ first game in a week and starts a run of four consecutive home games, including a stretch of three contests in five days.
Washington has four players averaging double-figures in scoring — Jaylen Nowell (19.3 points per game), Noah Dickerson (16.0), David Crisp (11.3) and Matisse Thybulle (11.0).
The freshman Nowell has reached double-digit scoring in every game so far this season including two 20-plus point scoring efforts. He is leading the Pac-12’s freshmen in scoring at 19.3 points per game and is the only Pac-12 freshman to reach 10-plus points in every game this season.
Seattle sits at 2-3 on the season after splitting a pair of games in the 2K Classic Nashville Subregional. The Redhawks earned a bit 102-71 win over Detroit Mercy before falling 90-77 to Belmont, who Washington defeated 86-82 to open the season.
After firing coach Cameron Dollar after eight seasons, the Redhawks are under the direction of new head coach Jim Hayford. The veteran coach was hired by Seattle in March after six seasons at Eastern Washington. Hayford has 18 total seasons as a head coach, amassing an overall record of 360-175 (.673).
Dollar, who spent seven years as a UW assistant before being hired by Seattle, returned to the Huskies again this season as an assistant under new head coach Mike Hopkins.
Four Redhawks average double figures in scoring — Matej Kavas (16.0), Josh Hearlihy (12.8), Jordan Hill (12.6) and Richaud Gittens (11.6).
