AquaSox bounce back with 6-0 win over Hops

HILLSBORO, Ore. — After losing two straight games to the worst team in the Northwest League, the Everett AquaSox bounced back with a 6-0 win over the Hillsboro Hops on Sunday.

AquaSox starter Steven Ewing had his best outing of the season, throwing 6 2/3 shutout innings. Ewing (1-1) scattered four hits with five strikeouts and didn’t walk anyone to pick up the victory.

Reggie Lawson led the Sox offense, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. Jack Reinheimer hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run under unusual circumstances in a three-run third for Everett (3-3 second half, 26-18 overall).

Chantz Mack singled off Hillsboro (4-2, 15-29) starter Braden Shipley (0-2) to start the inning, stole second and scored on Lawson’s double when Hops left-fielder Yogey Perez-Ramos made an ill-advised diving attempt.

But that wasn’t the worst play the left fielder would make in the inning.

Reinheimer hit a fly ball to left with two outs. Perez-Ramos drifted towards the foul line, but badly misread the ball as it landed near the warning track, about 100 feet away. Lawson scored easily and Reinheimer raced around the bases for his first professional homer.

Lawson put the game away in the eighth, doubling home two and later scoring the final run of the game on a throwing error by Hops catcher Yosbel Gutierrez.

Everett relievers Aaron Brooks and Jose Valdivia combined to record the final seven outs without allowing a Hillsboro baserunner.
