EVERETT — Nick Zammarelli showed just how quickly the game of baseball can both humble and exalt a player.
The Everett AquaSox third baseman atoned for a pair of errors with a bases-clearing double and a solo home run as the AquaSox knocked off the visiting Tri-City Dust Devils 9-5 Monday before 1,307 fans at Everett Memorial Stadium.
With the victory the Sox (16-15) took over sole possession of first place in the Northwest League North Division first-half standings. Tri-City (15-16) moved into a tie for second with Vancouver and Spokane.
Zammarelli’s second error came with two outs in the top of the fifth when Westhers Magdaleno hit a slow grounder that Zammarelli misplayed to allow two runs to score.
Zammarelli atoned in the bottom of the inning with a two-out, bases-loaded double that reclaimed the lead for Everett at 7-4.
His home run leading off the eighth extended the lead back to three runs after Tri-City had drawn within two on Boomer White’s RBI single.
Everett took the lead in the bottom of the first thanks to RBI doubles by Nick Thurman and Kyle Lewis and an RBI single by Johmbeyker Morales.
White doubled and scored on Taylor Kohlwey’s two-out single in the second, and Chris Baker added a solo homer in the third as the Dust Devils cut the lead to 3-2.
Ray Guerrini’s RBI single extended Everett’s lead to 4-2 in the fourth before the Dust Devils tied it in the fifth.
Lewis added an RBI double to Zammarelli’s homer in the eighth.
The teams combined for seven errors and seven unearned runs in the contest.
The series continues today at 11 a.m. Danny Garcia (1-1, 11.37 ERA) will start for Everett against Tri-City’s Emmanuel Ramirez (3-1, 2.48).
