EVERETT — On a day when every other Northwest League North Division team posted victories, the Everett AquaSox needed to beat the Eugene Emeralds on Saturday to hold their ground in the tightly-bunched division standings. The Frogs lost ground instead following their 3-2 loss at Everett Memorial Stadium.
With the loss, Everett fell three games behind division co-leaders Tri-City and Vancouver.
The Emeralds took the lead for good in the sixth inning. Rafael Narea led off the frame with a walk, stole second base and scored on a Gustavo Polanco single to give Eugene a 3-2 advantage.
The AquaSox took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when David Banuelos scored on a flyout by Manny Pazos. Banuelos had led off the inning with a walk, then moved to third base on a single by Joe Venturino.
In the third inning, Eugene Helder singled, went to second base on an error, third base via a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Onil Pena to give Everett a 2-0 advantage.
Eugene scored twice in the fourth inning to tie the game. Rafael Narea and Jhonny Bethencourt started the frame with back-to-back singles, and they scored when Austin Filiere hit a double to left field.
AquaSox starting pitcher Clay Chandler allowed four hits, three runs and three walks, striking out five in 51/3 innings.
Three Emeralds pitchers combined to strike out 12 Frogs batters.
The start of the game was delayed due to transportation issues for the Emeralds, according to the AquaSox’s Twitter account. The contest, which was originally scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m., began at 7:47 p.m.
