VANCOUVER, B.C. — Everett AquaSox pitchers Marcos Reyna, Grady Wood and Matt Vedo combined to shutout the Vancouver Canadians on only five hits and Janelfry Zorrilla hit a two-run homer as the AquaSox (11-14, 39-24) salvaged the final game of the series with a 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canadians on Saturday night.
Reyna, used exclusively as reliever, was forced into his first start of the year after Rusty Shellhorn was promoted to the Clinton Lumberkings. Although the right-hander had struggled in his last four appearances, allowing eight runs in 81/3 innings, Reyna tossed four shutout frames with six strikeouts and relievers Grady Wood (2-0) and Matt Vedo picked up where Reyna left off, combining to throw five scoreless innings.
Jason Leblebijian went 2-for-4 for Vancouver (16-10, 38-25), which was shutout for the first time this season.
The Canadians had gotten off to quick starts in the previous two games, scoring four runs in the first on Thursday and five runs in the first on Friday. After Reyna walked two of the three hitters, it appeared that trend would continue. However, Reyna escaped the inning on two fly outs and settled down over the next three innings, allowing just an infield single to Kellen Sweeney. Reyna ended his outing by fanning the side in the fourth.
Vancouver starter Ben White (4-5) nearly matched Reyna except for one mistake in the second. Alfredo Morales led off with a single off the glove of second baseman Daniel Arcila. On the first pitch to Zorrilla, the Sox outfielder hit a fly ball that hit the top of the left field wall and bounced over for his fourth home run of the season to give Everett a 2-0 lead.
Vancouver’s best chance to score came in the seventh when Dwight Smith, Jr. led off with a double down the right field line. Smith, Jr. then advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. Pinch hitter Jorge Flores hit a groundball straight to third baseman Patrick Kivlehan. Kivlehan beat Smith Jr. back to the base and tagged him out to end the threat.
The Canadians put the tying runs on base in the ninth with one out, but Vedo struck out Dan Klein and Flores to close out the game.
