EVERETT — The AquaSox used a three-run third inning and fended off a late threat to push themselves to a 3-2 victory and a series win over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in a Northwest League game played on Monday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Everett Left Fielder Phillips Castillo led off the bottom of the third with his first home run of the season to break up the scoreless tie. Jack Reinheimer extended his hitting streak to 13 games two batters later with an RBI single. Reinheimer scored the third and final run of the inning off of a D.J. Peterson RBI double.
The Volcanoes threatened in the top of the ninth when shortstop John Polonius hit a solo home run to bring Salem-Keizer to within one run. Everett reliever Tyler Wright allowed a single to Eugene Escalante and walked Ryan Jones before Nick Valenza was brought in to close the ninth. Valenza retired the final two Salem-Keizer hitters to earn his first save of the season.
Frogs starting pitcher Lars Huijer allowed just two hits in five innings and began the game by retiring the first 10 Volcanoes batters. Huijer had control issues in the fourth and fifth innings hitting three batters to bring his league-leading total to 10 hit batters.
