AquaSox top Dust Devils 5-4 in 13 innings to take series

PASCO — The Everett AquaSox earned their first series victory of the season Sunday as they topped the Tri-City Dust Devils 5-4 in 13 innings at Gesa Stadium.

The AquaSox (5-6), who took two of three from the Dust Devils, scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th when Austin Grebeck doubled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

That made a winner out of reliever JP Sears (1-0), who struck out five and allowed one hit in two scoreless innings. David Ellingson fanned one as he pitched a perfect 13th to earn his third save of the season.

The AquaSox never trailed as they took the early lead when Johnny Slater belted his second home run in as many games. This one came with Troy Dixon and Juan Camacho aboard to give Everett a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

The Dust Devils pulled within a run in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Mattison and Westhers Magdaleno had back-to-back RBI doubles with one out. But Everett starter Ryne Inman got the next two hitters out with a fly ball and a lineout and the 3-2 lead remained intact.

Everett got one run back in the top of the sixth thanks to three singles to open the frame and Slater scored on an error. The AquaSox had runners at second and third with nobody out, but a groundout followed by Johnny Adams lining into a double play ended the inning with Everett leading 4-2.

AquaSox reliever Ted Hammond struck out two in a scoreless seventh, but ran into trouble in the eighth. Two singles sandwiched around a strikeout led to him being lifted for Adonis De La Cruz. An infield error allowed Luis Anguizola to score before De La Cruz balked in Justin Lopez to tie the game.

Despite allowing two inherited runners to score, De La Cruz fanned four and walked one in 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief for Everett.

Inman went six strong innings. He struck out six, scattered five hits and allowed two earned runs. He did not walk a batter.

Tri-City starter Jim McDade went 62⁄3 innings and allowed eight hits. He struck out four. All four runs he allowed were unearned.

Dust Devils relievers Andres Munoz and Jose Galindo combined for 3 1/3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief and struck out six. Dalton Erb (0-1) was the hard-luck loser as he allowed the go-ahead run and two hits in three innings of relief.

Slater finished with two hits and two runs for Everett. Greifer Andrade and Dixon each had a pair of hits.

The AquaSox return home tonight for a 7:05 p.m. matchup with the Vancouver Canadians.
