BOISE, Idaho — The Everett AquaSox put the first run on the scoreboard on Thursday, but the Boise Hawks put up the most, battering the Frogs’ bullpen and breaking open a pitchers’ duel for a 9-5 victory.
The downfall for the AquaSox might have been in the top of the first inning, when they loaded the bases with nobody out, but managed only the one run. Leadoff batter Marcus Littlewood scored when teammate James Wood grounded into a double play. Michael Dowd then grounded out to end the inning and get Boise starting pitcher Benjamin Wells off the hook for what could have been serious trouble.
The Hawks got the equalizing run on an RBI single by Wes Darvil in the bottom of the second inning and went ahead for good with a RBI double by Travis Garcia in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Frogs’ starter Stephen Landazuri pitched well and kept the game close, but when he left trailing 2-1 after five innings of work, Boise hitters came to life. The Hawks jumped all over Everett relievers Jordan Pries and Cody Weiss, scoring seven more runs in the next three innings to take a 9-2 lead.
Pries pitched two innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits. Weiss pitched the eighth inning, giving up two hits and two runs, both coming on Jose Guevara’s first home run of the season. Weiss also walked to batters.
The Hawks added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks a costly error by Dowd, the AquaSox’s catcher. After forcing out Boise’s Paul Hoilman at home, an errant throw by Dowd allowed Reggie Golden and Garcia to score.
In the seventh, Boise added an RBI single by Rafael Lopez and a two-run home run by Hoilman.
The AquaSox tried to rally in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three runs via an error, three singles, a bases loaded walk and a fielder’s choice.
