When you think Montana, you don’t necessarily think basketball.
You also don’t necessarily think excitement.
But that’s where Meadowdale girls basketball star Margreet Barhoum knew she wanted to go. Barhoum signed a letter of intent in February to continue her basketball — and education — career at Montana State University.
“The whole atmosphere was great,” Barhoum said. “It was so pretty there and the town’s not small at all. It’s like everything I need. I think it’s totally under-hyped.”
Barhoum said she clicked instantly with the coaches and girls on the team. She toured the campus and found out that there’s a good turnout for girls basketball at MSU. In fact, she says Bozeman, Mont., is the epitome of a college town, and that’s a big part of what drew her to the city.
“Bozeman’s definitely a college town. Everywhere you go you see the Bobcat logo,” Barhoum said. “I love that about it. I’ve always wanted to go to a town that cares about athletics.”
The Meadowdale star was an honorable mention on the Associated Press All-State girls 3A team. She led Wesco in scoring with more than 21 points a game, and finished with the most points in a three-year span in Meadowdale history.
Montana State was Barhoum’s top choice, but she did visit a couple other schools just to be sure. She said her family is going to head over to Bozeman to watch a few games. The Bobcats, which feature three girls from the State of Washington are also trying to set up a game against the University of Washington team in the future.
The Mavericks senior doesn’t have much of a summer vacation. Barhoum graduates on June 15, and then heads to MSU for summer classes on June 22.
While at MSU, Barhoum plans on studying business marketing, so she can make a lot of money. She might also hang out with Ryan Shannon, a member of the Mountlake Terrace boys team that will also be heading to Bozeman to play basketball.
“We’re friends. We’re Facebook friends,” Barhoum said. “It’ll be fun to have someone I know going up there.”
