Big inning for Snohomish spells doom for Kamiak

Herald staff

MUKILTEO – Two outs, so what.

Trailing by a run with two outs in the fifth inning, the Snohomish baseball team rallied for five runs in the inning to defeat Kamiak 10-8 Saturday afternoon.

The win keeps Snohomish undefeated at 4-0 overall, while Kamiak dropped to 2-1 with the loss.

In the pivotal fifth, Stephen Sperry led the Panther’s charge.

With one swing of the bat Sperry knocked in the go-ahead run on a two-run double. Snohomish’s Trevor Johnson, Peter Moormeier, and Derek Bennion all singled following Sperry to drive in three more runs and give the Panthers a comfortable lead at 10-6.

Moormeier’s feats weren’t relegated to the fifth inning, however. Moormeier finished the day a healthy 4-for-4 with a double and a home-run and five RBI. Also, in the field, Moormeier made a running catch in the gap to save two runs in the fourth inning.

“Peter Moormeier had a great day,” said Snohomish coach Kim Hammons. “His catch out in right field was incredible.”

Kamiak came back to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull within two, but Snohomish’s Mike Jackson closed the deal for the Panthers pitching a no-hit sixth and seventh innings.

Nate Santiago went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple and played solid defense at shortstop to lead the Knights.
