Fishing has been good for a mix of chinook and early coho at the bottom end of the Columbia River, according to state biologist Joe Hymer in Vancouver. Chinook will weigh 8 to 10 pounds, with some into the low teens and the occasional hog to 20 or even 30 pounds, Hymer said. Fishermen at buoy 10 last weekend averaged about one chinook for every two boats last weekend, and 1.4 coho per boat.

Farther upstream, steelhead are the target at Drano Lake, and fishing has been good. Including fish released, anglers averaged a fish per rod over the weekend but, unfortunately, two-thirds of the catch were wild steelhead and had to be released. Some 50 boats were counted there Sunday.

Cowlitz River steelheaders are taking fish, averaging a fish per rod kept for boat anglers. The best areas were at the trout hatchery, and down at the bottom end of the river.
