Pete Carroll’s Monday press conference is still a few hours away, but he did just go on 710 ESPN Seattle with Mike Salk and Brock Huard, and indicated that Matt Hasselbeck is still his quarterback, though he left the door open for a change.
“Matt’s taking the No. 1 snaps, he’s our No. 1 quarterback,” Carroll said, but he also added, “We’re going to take a serious look. … We’ll do whatever we think is the exactly the right thing.”
Carroll said he doesn’t mind waiting until later in the week to make the final call between Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst, but it sounded like the Seahawks will stick with Hasselbeck considering they are still in the playoff race.
“Charlie has started one game in his career, and we’re in this thing to win a division championship,” Carroll said. “… I want to make sure [Matt’s] OK, it was a hard weekend for him.”
Hasselbeck threw two interceptions and fumbled in the end zone in Sunday’s 34-18 loss to Atlanta.
Speaking of Seattle’s playoff hopes, Sunday actually made the Seahawks road to the postseason clearer even with a loss because the rest of the division lost.
The Seahawks will win the NFC West and host a playoff game if:
They win each of their final two games — at Tampa Bay this weekend and home against St. Louis to end the season.
OR
They lose to Tampa Bay and beat St. Louis AND St. Louis beats San Francisco this weekend.
