It’s been a season of streaks for the Cascade boys basketball team. The Bruins began the year with four straight losses. In mid-December, they won three in a row. Currently, they are on a six-game losing streak.
Inconsistencies will come with inexperience, and Cascade is a relatively inexperienced team. A year after winning the Wesco 4A title, advancing to the regional round of the Class 4A state tournament and posting a 21-2 overall record, the Bruins are trying to learn to win with a new core group.
“A lot of these guys were role players last year, and we’re asking them to step up their production this season,” Cascade coach Darrell McNeal said. “Our two returning starters (D’Andre Bryant and Trevon Blackmon) are giving us good offensive production, but we’re trying to get more out of the supporting (cast). They’re still trying to understand their roles.”
Cascade (4-11 overall, 2-7 Wesco 4A) gave conference-leading Glacier Peak a good game Jan. 17, losing 50-45. McNeal said he hopes his team can replicate that effort going forward and qualify for postseason play.
“We hope that (the Glacier Peak game) was a step in the right direction,” he said. “Things have finally started to click. We understood that we would have growing pains early, and we’ve been inconsistent. But now that the second half of the season is here, we want to be playing our best basketball. I’ve tried new things, new lineups, made a ton of adjustments. I feel that we’re getting better.”
