Community roundup: Arlington grad Ladines pitches perfect game

It would be hard to have a better day than the one Ronnie Ladines had Saturday.

The Arlington High School graduate, who is now a senior on the Kent State University softball team, threw a five-inning perfect game and also blasted the game-winning home run as the Golden Flashes defeated the Buffalo Bulls 10-0 in the second game of a doubleheader in Buffalo, N.Y.

Ladines, who graduated from Arlington in 2014, retired all 15 batters she faced, striking out four, to record just the third perfect game in Kent State history.

Ladines also did damage at the plate, hitting a three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning to snap a scoreless tie. It was Ladines’ second homer of the day, as she also went deep in the Golden Flashes’ 11-1 victory in the first game of the twinbill.

This season on the mound Ladines, Kent State’s ace pitcher, is 13-13 with a 2.15 ERA, striking out 158 in 186.0 innings. At the plate she’s batting .263 with seven homers and 32 RBI in 45 games.

Beard places at PacWests

Kamiak High School graduate Tim Beard, now a freshman at Azusa Pacific University, took third place in the men’s hammer throw at the Pacific West Conference Track and Field Championships over the weekend in San Diego. Beard’s throw of 177 feet, 2 inches was a personal best and also achieved the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II nationals.
