Edmonds-Woodway edges Meadowdale in double OT

EDMONDS — Edmonds-Woodway quarterback Davis Giles completed a 22-yard scoring pass to tight end Theo Lebesis in the second overtime Friday night to lift Edmonds-Woodway to a 20-14 non-conference victory over Meadowdale at Edmonds Stadium.

Moments before, E-W defensive back Chantz Justice ended Meadowdale’s possession with an interception.

The win improved the Warriors’ record to 3-0. Meadowdale dropped to 2-1.

The winning touchdown pass capped a back-and-forth battle between the two cross-district rivals. Meadowdale became the first team to score on E-W this season with a second-quarter touchdown, giving the Mavericks a 7-0 lead.

The Warriors added the tying touchdown midway through the third quarter. The game went into overtime knotted 7-7.

Mavs kicker Brett Schafer had a chance to win the game with a 47-yard field goal on the final play of regulation, but the kick fell just short. Moments before, the Mavericks suffered another costly penalty that pushed them back 5 yards and probably kept the kick from being good.

In the first overtime, E-W had the initial possession and running back Junior Opoku-Mensah scored on a 7-yard run through the left side. Placer-kicker Ebrima Fatty added the extra-point for a 14-7 lead.

Meadowdale answered with a scoring drive of its own. Quarterback Jerremiah Evans carried or passed on all five plays, including an 8-yard scoring run off right tackle. Schafer added the extra-point to send the game into the second overtime.
