EUGENE, Ore. — Pinch hitter Edwin Moreno’s two-out bases-loaded RBI single to center field scored Franchy Cordero to lift the Eugene Emeralds to a 7-6 win over the Everett AquaSox in a Northwest League game on Sunday afternoon at PK Park.
Eugene won the series 3-2. All three of their wins were by one run. The AquaSox lead the Northwest League with 17 one-run losses.
In the top of the third, the AquaSox scored four runs on six hits to take a 4-1 lead. Chris Mariscal, Joe DeCarlo, Kyle Petty and James Alfonso had RBI singles for the AquaSox.
The first four Eugene batters reached base against Everett’s Ramire Cleto in the bottom of the fourth. Marcus Davis struck out to start the inning but reached first on a passed ball by catcher Luke Guarnaccia. After Nick Torres walked, Yale Rosen hit an RBI double to make it 4-2. A Cleto wild pitch scored Torres from third. Nick Vilter walked to load the bases, and Cleto was replaced by Cruz Pereira. Jose Ruiz’s grounder to shortstop Chris Mariscal was juggled and dropped for an error as Rosen scored from third to tie the score at 4-4. Two batters later, with runners at first and third, the Emeralds successfully executed a double steal as Nick Vilter came in from third to give Eugene a 5-4 lead. The Emeralds stole six bases on six attempts in the game.
Down 6-5 in the top of the ninth the AquaSox tied the score on Austin Cousino’s third hit of the game — a RBI double — that scored Jordan Cowan from third base. After Cousino took third on the throw home with none out, Eugene closer Bryan Verbitsky retired the next three AquaSox batters in order.
