RED DEER, Alberta — The Everett Silvertips found their backs against the wall until the final moment against the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night. But somehow the Tips found a way to pull it off.
Kent Simpson made 52 saves, and the Tips rallied late to defeat the Rebels 3-2 in a shootout.
Everett trailed 2-0 going into the third period and was being badly outshot. But the Tips pulled back even in the third with what amounted to two power-play goals. Then in the shootout, Ryan Harrison and Jari Erricson both converted when missing would have given Red Deer the win, then Cody Fowlie scored in the fifth round to give the Tips a 3-2 victory in the shootout.
Everett never would have made it to that point if not for Simpson, who despite being pummeled with shots was able to to stand tall in goal. He did his best work in the third period after the Tips tied it.
Kohl Bauml and Josh Winquist scored the goals in regulation for Everett (4-9-0-2), which played the third period without sniper Tyler Maxwell for undisclosed reasons.
John Persson and Josh Cowen scored for Red Deer (8-4-0-1). Bolton Pouliot finished with 26 saves in net for the Rebels.
Everett seemed down and out when the third period began. The Tips trailed 2-0 and were being outshot 35-12.
But the Rebels got into penalty trouble and the Tips capitalized. First, at 5 minutes, 29 seconds, Bauml converted a feed from Erricson just after a penalty expired to pull the Tips within one. Then at 9:00 during another power play, Winquist roofed a shot after an extended flurry by the Tips to tie it up.
The Tips held out the rest of regulation, thanks largely to Simpson, then earned their first shootout win of the season.
The first period was all Red Deer as the Rebels outshot Everett 18-5. However, Simpson turned everything away as the game remained scoreless.
But in the second period the Rebels started converting. Red Deer opened the scoring at 2:02 when Persson was left all alone in front. The Rebels doubled their lead at 9:52 when Simpson failed in his attempt to cover a loose puck, and Cowen was able to jam it home.
