Familiar place, opponent for Meadowdale softball

The last time Meadowdale played in a state softball contest, the Mavericks defeated University 7-2 to take third place at the 3A state tournament last season.

This year, Meadowdale is hoping for a similar result in its first-round game, as the Mavericks are set to square off against University again in the two teams’ state opener Friday at noon at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.

Meadowdale head coach Dennis Hopkins said it’s nice to have a little familiarity with a state opponent, although a lot has changed — for both teams — since they met last season.

“Everybody changes in the offseason,” Hopkins said. “Either way you look at it, if you keep playing you’re going to play them sometime. Hopefully, we can get them out of the way early.”

The Mavericks are heading to the state tournament for the third-consecutive season. Hopkins would really like for Meadowdale to bring home another trophy this time around.

“We’re pumped,” Hopkins said. “We figured it out. 48 teams put the gear away (after district tournaments). Over 600 girls stopped playing for the year. It’s anybody’s game going forward. Anything could happen in Lacey.”
