Frogs fumble their way to 10-1 loss

SPOKANE — The Everett AquaSox broke down in all facets of the game, falling to the Spokane Indians 10-1 in Northwest League baseball action Friday night.

Everett committed nearly as many errors (four) as it had hits (five), and the Sox struck out 14 times. Everett’s pitchers piled onto the dumpster fire with two wild pitches and twice failing to cover first base on grounders to the right side.

Diego Cedeno went 3-for-4 to lead Spokane (5-10 second half, 30-23 overall).

Chris Mariscal homered to pace Everett (8-7, 19-34).

It was another rough outing for Sox pitcher Luiz Gohara. The 17-year-old Brazilian, considered one of the top prospects in the Seattle Mariners’ system, lasted just 3? innings, allowing seven runs. His ERA ballooned to 10.80 in eight starts with the Sox.

The game went crooked for Everett in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Sox were already trailing 2-1 when they broke down defensively, committing three errors to help the Indians rally for eight runs.

It began when Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a comebacker to Gohara with Jose Cardona on third. Gohara had Cardona dead at the plate, but he threw the ball to the backstop, allowing the run to score.

A second run scored, and Spokane had the bases loaded when Gohara was yanked in favor of Leoncio Munoz. Munoz got Eduard Pinto to hit a potential inning-ending double-play ball to first, but the ball got under the glove of first baseman Kristian Brito. Two runs scored on the error.

The Indians ended up sending 13 men to the plate in the inning, tacking on four more runs to make it 10-1 and put the game well out of reach.
