Huijer allows one hit in 8 innings as AquaSox win 6-0

HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Everett AquaSox pitching staff and Lars Huijer are on a roll.

Sox pitchers have thrown three consecutive shutouts and Huijer has a personal streak of 23 scoreless frames after Everett’s 6-0 win over the Hillsboro Hops on Tuesday night.

Huijer allowed only one hit and needed just 83 pitches to throw eight innings. The Dutch right-hander improved to 7-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.57.

Phillips Castillo hit a three-run home run and Christian Carmichael had two hits and two RBI as Everett won its third consecutive game, all by identical 6-0 scores.

The Sox (5-3 second half, 28-18 overall) scored all their runs in one inning against Hops starter Ross Gerdeman. Gerdeman (0-5) had retired the first nine batters he faced, but opened the fourth by issuing back-to-back walks to Brock Hebert and Jack Reinheimer. Justin Seager followed with a single, the first hit of the game for either team, which scored Hebert.

After Chantz Mack’s single loaded the bases, Carmichael lined a base hit down the left-field line to drive in two. Two outs later, Castillo launched a long home run to left field with two aboard to cap the six-run inning.

Given the big lead, Huijer was able to keep the Hops (4-4, 15-31) at bay and allowed just three baserunners total. Huijer carried a no-hitter into the seventh before Hillsboro’s Yogey Perez-Ramos singled on the first pitch to break it up.

Huijer also pitched a one-hitter his last outing, going seven innings on July 25 in a 6-0 over Tri-City at Everett Memorial Stadium.
