Huskies knocked out volleyball tournament

OMAHA, Neb. — Fourth-seeded Nebraska eliminated Washington in the NCAA volleyball tournament on Friday night, sweeping the Huskies 25-15, 25-21, 25-23 in the round of 16.

It’s the first time all year that UW (25-7) was swept in a match. Washington fell behind the Huskers (26-6) early in every set.

“The Huskers played really well, and we didn’t,” UW coach Jim McLaughlin said. “Our girls played hard, I thought the energy level was very good. The environment was outstanding, it was incredible, I don’t think we responded well, or it took us a while to get our feet under us.”

Sophomore Krista Vansant had a solid night to lead UW. She had 11 kills and hit .242 for the match with four blocks. Senior Amanda Gil had a match-high six blocks and likely will end up as the NCAA blocks leader this season.

UW Senior Kylin Munoz, a Monroe High alum, had seven kills, four blocks and a .217 hitting percentage while freshman Melanie Wade hit .333 with four kills and four blocks. No other Husky hit over .200 and the UW as a team hit just .130 while Nebraska hit .233 for the match.
