SEATTLE — Thursday was another day of change for the University of Washington men’s basketball program.
Coach Lorenzo Romar announced that his staff will add another new assistant in Lamont Smith, a former Arizona State assistant coach, while Paul Fortier takes a new job in the program as director of personnel and player development.
Smith joins a coaching staff that recently added longtime Western Washington head coach Brad Jackson and also retained Jim Shaw. Former assistant Raphael Chillious left the program to take a similar job at Villanova earlier this week.
Smith was a graduate assistant under Romar at St. Louis University from 1999 through 2001 and spent the past five years at Arizona State.
“We are excited to welcome Lamont Smith on our staff,” Romar said in a statement released through the UW athletic department. “Lamont is very energetic and a dynamic recruiter.
“… I know Lamont really well. I was able to give him his first job and I coached against him when he was a player at the University of San Diego. He has a great basketball mind and will have a big impact on our program.”
