Jackson fourth in state meet

SEATTLE – Jackson, the only team in the tournament with a losing match record in the regular season, finished fourth Saturday in the girls bowling state meet at Leilani Lanes.

Wenatchee won the state championship with a two-day total of 6,891 pins. Jackson, the Northwest District champion, had 6,747 pins. Everett, the district runner-up, placed sixth with 6,338 pins.

“For a team nobody had heard of to come out of the woodwork and finished fourth at state is pretty amazing,” Jackson assistant coach Brian Whetzel said.

Jackson’s Jennifer Whetzel posted the tournament’s high average at 213 and was named to the all-state first team.

Jackson’s Leiann Reiter and Rachel Koenig-Eng were named to the second team as was Everett’s Jennifer Michel. Everett’s Rachel Robinson received honorable mention.

Jackson also had the tournament’s high game, a 941 on Friday.

The Timberwolves finished fourth in the Western Conference with a 16-29 record, but bolted to the front of the pack in Tuesday’s district competition.

“Honestly, it’s something you couldn’t describe,” Brian Whetzel said. “Something inside the team just decided it was time to go.”
