EVERETT — A storied golf rivalry may have found another member.
Thanks to a 2-under-par 70 from Joe Fryer and a 71 from Chris Hatch, Kamiak held off Glacier Peak to win the 11th Annual Tom Dolan Invitational Monday afternoon at the Everett Golf and Country Club.
The Grizzlies put some pressure on the Knights late, finishing second with a team score of 309, 13 strokes behind Kamiak (296). In the golf event’s 11-year history, Kamiak and Jackson are the only schools to hoist the winner’s trophy.
Kamiak, the defending champion, won the invitational for the fourth time in the past five years. But Glacier Peak made an impression on Knights’ head coach Jeff Tobin.
“Glacier Peak is 3A, so we don’t really see them,” Tobin said. “I had no idea what level of players Glacier Peak had, but obviously they have a good team.”
Glacier Peak’s Ben Richards shot a 4-under 68 — the best score of his career — to win medalist honors. According to Richards, it was the first time he finished an event under par.
“It’s a really nice, prestigious event,” said Richards, a junior at Glacier Peak. “It’ll be nice to get my name on the trophy — that can’t be taken off ever.”
The 11th run of the Dolan Invitational — on the 18-hole, par-72 course — boasted 120 participants from 24 local schools — including 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A classifications. Each school had five golfers, with the four lowest golfers counting toward the team score.
Tobin said keeping the winner’s trophy in Kamiak’s possession was a huge goal for his team.
“We won it last year,” said Tobin, who has coached the Knights for 15 years. “We had that in front of us. We wanted to win again. … To have the trophy is an honor and to hang on to it is a real goal.”
Kamiak was able to accomplish that goal thanks in large part to Fryer and Hatch. Fryer tied for second-place with Shorewood’s Chris Babcock, last year’s winner, and Hatch finished in a three-way tie for fourth place.
“They’re pushing each other all the time,” Tobin said of teammates Fryer and Hatch. “They’re both great players.”
Fryer, a sophomore, finished tied for second — with a score of 72 — in his first Dolan Invitational last year. This time around, he missed the fairway on his first five shots, but was able to come back and help his team pull out a victory.
“Whenever I had a bogey I bounced back,” Fryer said. “… I’m satisfied. It could have been a little better.”
Tyler Singer shot a 79 for Kamiak and finished tied for 21st with six other golfers. Tobin praised the junior who didn’t make the team last year, after making the team as a freshman.
“He worked so hard,” Tobin said. “… Then he puts up a good score. That was a big score for us.”
Glacier Peak’s Josh Reines (76) and Conner Denessen (78) both finished in the top-20 to help the Grizzlies to their second-place finish.

Snohomish (312) ushered in a run of Wesco North teams with its third-place finish, followed by Stanwood (317) and Arlington (318). Everett (318) tied for fifth, Lake Stevens (322) was seventh and Jackson (326) finished eighth.
Cornish praised the event, which he called a “unique and special opportunity for high school players to play a 101-year old country club.”
“For some players this is as big as it gets,” Cornish said. “It’s a very special experience whether you finish first or last.”
The Dolan Invitational is named after the Dolan family. The Everett Golf and Country Club hosts the Dolan Invitational every year, and invites all the local schools to attend.
“This family invested in these guys’ experiences,” Cornish said while gesturing toward Richards. “Most of whom would never have an opportunity to play here.”
Tobin said the Dolan Invite, which takes place about halfway through the high school golf season, is a good way to see where his team stacks up against the area’s schools that it doesn’t see as much, like Glacier Peak.
“It’s fun and it’s also a good measurement of where you’re at, for the individual players,” Tobin said. “… You’re going to see some players that you wouldn’t normally see.”
