Kelowna 3, Everett 2 (SO)

TALKING POINTS

There haven’t been many times this season when I could have said this, but Everett deserved a better fate tonight.

Everett turned in one of its most complete performances of the season. The Tips have generally been on the wrong side of lopsided shot totals. Tonight Everett outshot Kelowna 41-22. The Tips were crisp, they showed an incredible amount of energy for a team that had to bus over a snowy Coquihalla each of the past two nights, and they created all kinds of good scoring chances.

But Jordon Cooke was outstanding in goal for the Rockets, making several last-ditch saves to bail Kelowna out. And once it went to the shootout the result was inevitable. Kelowna won the shootout 1-0 to drop Everett to 1-8 in shootouts this season. Six of those eight shootout losses have come by 1-0 scores. Zach Franko, who scored the lone goal in the shootout, has five shootout goals this season (in six attempts). The Tips as a team have six (in 33 attempts).

Despite controlling play, Everett had to dig deep late in regulation to earn its point. The Tips twice handed Kelowna power plays in the final six minutes, but Everett’s penalty kill was excellent to keep the score tied and force OT.

TURNING POINT

In the shootout Everett’s second shooter, Ryan Murray, had Cooke down and out with a great move to his forehand. However, Cooke somehow flung out his leg to make the save and preserve Kelowna’s 1-0 advantage.

HIT OF THE DAY

Everett’s Nick Walters had something of an epic night hitting wise. The best of them came midway through the first period when he blew up Brett Lyon as Lyon tried to enter the offensive zone with speed.

THREE STARS

First star: Cooke. 39 saves, it wasn’t hard to pick out the No. 1 star tonight.

Second star: Reid Petryk, Everett. One goal, congrats on the first goal as a member of the Silvertips.

Third star: Kohl Bauml, Everett. One assist, he just keeps getting better and better.

The Herald’s honorable mention: Jari Erricson, Everett. No points, but was a real puck hound.
